Background and Education
Dr. Champaneria was born and raised in Southern California. His adolescence was highlighted by his commitment to scholarship and community service-- graduating from Whitney High School, one of the country’s foremost magnet high schools, with highest honors and also attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended UCLA and graduated with honors in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience. He then attended the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, where he received several scholarships and awards, and graduated with distinction at the top of his class in 2007. Amongst his highest achievements was induction into Alpha Omega Alpha, the honor society for graduating medical students.
In 2005, during medical school, Dr. Champaneria was accepted into the highly competitive Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. With the intent to study general surgery, he researched neuroendocrine tumors and gastric physiology, which led to over twenty publications in books and journals. After a suggestion from his mentor, he decided to pursue plastic surgery. He went on an international medical mission to Amman, Jordan with Operation Smile, and fell in love with plastic surgery as a career. He was captivated by the variety, technical challenge, as well as the creativity and artistic nature of the specialty.
