It’s common to have some stubborn pockets of fat or cellulite that can’t be altered with a healthy diet and exercise. While these areas may bother you, they may not bother you enough to have surgical liposuction. At PeaceHealth Medical Group serving patients in the Portland area and Southwest Washington, plastic surgeons Dr. Gabriel and Dr. Champaneria offer nonsurgical fat reduction with radio frequency energy systems by BTL Aesthetics. PeaceHealth offer two radio frequency body sculpting treatments: Vanquish ME and Exilis Elite. Radio frequency fat removal uses heat energy to break down cellulite over a few months and be naturally processed out of the body and tighten the skin in the treated areas.
The BTL Vanquish ME nonsurgical fat reduction system is best for large areas, like the stomach and thighs. During the treatment, the devise is passed over the body, but does not touch the skin. The thermal energy is tuned to only affect the fatty tissue and not the skin or muscles, so only the fat layers are reduced.
The Exilis Elite from BTL Aesthetics is a nonsurgical fat reduction treatment that is best for smaller areas (including facial rejuvenation) and overall skin tightening.Unlike the Vanquish ME, Exilis Elite is a handheld device that maintains contact with the skin during the treatment. The design of the Exilis Elite allows the technician to choose multiple temperatures for the different layers of the body, so the skin is cooled while the fat tissue is heated. The Exilis Elite also heats and disrupts the collagen fibers in the skin, which prompts the body to heal and produce more collagen for firmer, healthier skin.

About the Procedure
During a Vanquish or Exilis treatment, patients will not feel any pain, but will feel slight heat in the areas being treated. The practitioner will place the device on the area of the body where the fat is to be removed. The device uses radio frequency energy to heat the fat cells without affecting the surrounding skin and tissues. Treatment will last about an hour, depending on the size of the area being treated and most patients describe the treatment as feeling like a warm blanket. Following the procedure, patients can resume their normal day. They may experience some redness and tingling on the treated area, but this will subside quickly.
During/After The Procedure
Patients may begin to see visible results after 2 - 3 sessions, but final results will be seen about 6 months after their final treatment. Patients will see better results if they increase their water intake and follow a healthy diet during and after their treatments. The radio frequency treatments also increase the body’s natural collagen production, which increases the elasticity and firmness of the skin over time.

Number of Treatments?
During the initial consultation, Dr. Gabriel or Dr. Champaneria will discuss the number of treatment sessions they recommend. Multiple treatments may be recommended for those who have thicker layers of fat in the target areas. Depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals, the doctor may recommend about 2 - 6 sessions scheduled 1 - 2 weeks apart.
Compared to Coolsculpting?
The most obvious difference between Coolsculpting or cryopolysis and the BTL radio frequency treatments is that one uses energy to freeze the fat and the other uses heat to break down the fat cells. Both use extreme temperatures to disrupt the fat cells without affecting the surrounding skin and tissues, however BTL Vanquish and Exilis tend to produce more impressive results in less time than Coolsculpting.
How Safe Is It?
Nonsurgical fat reduction through radio frequency works by applying a controlled temperature, targeting fat cells in selected areas for treatment. As it is noninvasive and applied only on the skin’s surface, there is no need for a recovery period, except for some redness that can last from as little as a few minutes up to a few hours. There may also be some swelling that may last for a week. Basically, fat cells are ‘heated to death’ and the fat is broken down by the body and released in its natural process.
Will I Be Fat Again?
Once the treated fat cells are eliminated from the body, they cannot regenerate. This does not mean that new fat cells cannot form where the fat cells were already removed. Peace Health Medical Group advises their patients to adhere to an active lifestyle and healthy diet so the results achieved will be long-term.
